    • CARLSBAD -- Elsie Mary Ziegler, 97, (nee Reif) passed away on Friday, May 23, 2008 at Silvergate in San Marcos. Born November 15, 1910 in Chicago, she also lived in Park Ridge and Barrington, Ill., before moving to San Diego in 1979. She is predeceased by her husband, Norman A. Ziegler, who died in 1986. Elsie, nicknamed Peggy, was a mother, homemaker and freelance writer of short stories and novels. She received numerous awards for her writing and published stories in Every Woman, Judy's, Extension Magazine the Toronto Star, The Chicago Daily News Sunday Supplement, the Writer's Digest as well as Farm Journal Magazine. Her historically based books for young adults are available in most libraries in the U.S. and the internet, and deal with trades that immigrants brought to this country in the 19th century. These include glassblowing in "The Blowing Wand" and stone cutting in "Face in the Stone" both Junior Literary Guild Selections. Another book, "Light a Little Lamp," was about a young girl whose heroism during the great Chicago fire led her to become an important social worker. She is survived by her three children; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons: her son, Peter of Carlsbad and her grandchildren and their spouses, Theodora and Shannon Phelps of Carlsbad, Erick and Soniya Ziegler of Walnut Creek and Bryan and Michelle Ziegler of Encinitas, and great grandsons, Jacob and Samuel; her daughter, Gail and Gordon Duggan of Cold Spring, N.Y., and grandchildren, Edward and Catherine; her daughter, Karen Black and Steven Eckelberry of Sherman Oaks, and grandchildren, Hunter and Celine.
