Notes |
- In January 2014, I (Joseph M. Zellner) discovered a DNA match on ancestry.com from a sample I had submitted about a year prior. It suggested with 99% certainty that John Patrick Stanley was my 2nd to 3rd cousin. Further research has indicated a strong probability that John Patrick Stanley is the same individual as Jacob Steets, who was orphaned in Newark by about 1903. He last appears in the 1910 census, living with aunts and uncles including Albert Mees (who may appear in the 1920 and later censuses in the Essex County Hospital for the Insane).
John Patrick Stanley first appears in Connecticut in 1917, at about age 25. I have not yet been able to find any prior references to him. I am continuing to actively pursue this connection, but feel confident at this time in merging these two individuals.
Remington's ammunition plant was in Bridgeport, along with a large rifle manufacturing facility that was built in 1915. It is highly likely that John was involved in the production of weapons and/or ordinance for WWI. Perhaps the job opportunity is what first brought him to Connecticut. It could very well be that the anti-German sentiment that arose during WWI led to the name change as well.
Single as of 6/5/1917
A Private John P. Stanley of Waterbury, Connecticut was listed as Missing in Action during WWI.
