A Rahway school board member was believed killed yesterday morning when fire destroyed his home on Midwood Drive.
While authorities could not positively identify the badly burned body found in the attic, officials and family members suspect the victim is Peter G. Schirmer, a lawyer who was elected to the board of education last year.
Schirmer, 52, was believed to be alone in his house when the fire started about 6:30 a.m. Schirmer was separated from his wife, Charlotte O'Connor, but lived with the couple's 14-year-old daughter, Colette, who was spending the night at a friend's house, according to fire officials.
O'Connor said the family was shocked and devastated, and despite the lack of identification they were making funeral arrangements. Police said autopsy results could take from a day to one week, as the body was burned beyond recognition.
"He was the greatest guy in the world and loved our daughter more than life itself," said his former wife, who said despite their separation the couple had stayed very close friends.
When firefighters arrived, the entire two-story house was engulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control in half an hour by 40 firefighters from Rahway and Roselle, said Rahway Battalion Chief Gerard Dodman.
Two Rahway firefighters were injured when a staircase collapsed, Dodman added. Charles Leone and John Fleocshman were treated for minor injuries in Rahway Hospital and released.
Next-door neighbor William Smeltzer managed to save the family dog but the intense smoke and heat prevented him from helping Schirmer, police Capt. Kevin White said.
Neighbor and fellow school board member Peter Kowal sat on the steps of his house yesterday, staring at the burned-out home.
"The fire was unbelievably intense. We woke up from the sound of it," said Kowal, a close friend who remembered Schirmer as a kind and friendly neighbor.
Schirmer was elected to the school board in April and had been an active and vocal member, participating in several committees, board attorney Alan Schnirman said.
"This is shocking and certainly a big loss to us," Schnirman said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
