- Robert W Amory, Sr, 93, of Punta Gorda, Florida and formerly of Lincroft, NJ died on Friday, December 19, 2014. Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps, First Division and as a First Engineering Officer on Merchant Tankers during World War II. He is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with a BS in Marine Engineering, and from N.J. Institute of Technology with a BS in Electrical Engineering. In his 37 year career in the Bell System, Bob spent two years with NJ Bell, 30 years at Bell Laboratories, and five years at AT&T. At Bell Labs he had responsibility for North East Professional Employment, design and development for the Nike Missile Test Set, and Computer System Modeling. He also designed one of the first Bell Labs computer programs to become utilized in the Operating Companies. At AT&T. Bob was head of the Operations Research department and developed and directed the AT&T Computer System Design program at the Wharton School. He was a Telephone Pioneer and Past President of the Piscataway NJ branch of the Pioneers.
Bob was an avid sailor, having built his first sail boat in his bedroom at age 16. He has rebuilt several sail boats, and has made many ocean voyages, including two Trans-Pacific voyages as navigator, between Vancouver, BC and Hawaii. He was a Past Commander of the Shrewsbury Power Squadron and a member of the NJ and NY Navigators Club, Shrewsbury Yacht Club, and Isles Yacht Club.
He follows his beloved wife Mary and leaves his sons Robert Jr. of Punta Gorda and Dr. Kevin; and brothers Dr. David, of Seattle, WA and Richard of Toms River, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at San Antonio Church, Port Charlotte, FL and St. Leo the Great Church, Lincroft, NJ this Spring.
