  • Notes
    • Pfaffenhausen and Oberndorf are small villages within a mile of each other in modern-day Jossgrund, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Hessen, Germany. Jossgrund lies on the Hessian side of the border with Bavaria. The two towns merged with Burgjoß and Lettgenbrunn in the 1970s to form Jossgrund. They are part of the Diocese of Fulda. In 1871, both towns were part of Gelnhausen Kreis. This is the name used in the Meyers Gazetteer, so it is the named referenced by Familysearch. http://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20469013

The surnames Steets and Harnischfeger figure prominently in this area. Steets is especially common.

"Back in the 1840's/50's when these families emigrated, Oberndorf was in fact part of Bavaria, having been granted to Bavaria in 1815 by the Treaty of Vienna. There it remained until 1866, when another treaty ceded it to Prussia (and thus to Hessen)."

Church registers exist, but I have not located LDS microfilms. According to one Web site, they are entitled: "Kirchenbücher der kath. Gemeinde Jossgrund-Oberndorf St. Martin und Filialen Pfaffenhausen, Burgjoß und Mernes."

The repository for these books is listed as "Bistumsarchiv Fulda, Bischöfliches Generalvikariat
      Paulustor 5
      D-36037 Fulda
      +49 661 87375"

It does not seem extremely likely that this is the same person, but a John Steets was living in the New Market Ward of Philadelphia during the 1830 census.

I have deduced that Bernard Steets was likely John's father, but it has not yet been proven.

6 October 2014: Findagrave entry for burial of Jacob and Margaretha Steets at St. Mary's refers to Pfaffenhausen as being in Bad-Kissingen, about 21 miles east as the crow flies. Another Oberndorf was absorbed into Schweinfurt, another 20 miles to the east, in 1919.
