  • Notes 
    • Joan M. Scheuermann, nee Zellner, 87, of Union, died Thursday at home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Theresa's Church, Kenilworth on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Viewing will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 from 4 to 8 PM at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield.

      Born in Newark, Mrs. Scheuermann lived in Kenilworth fifty-six years before moving to Union in 2006. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas and Newark State College in Union. Mrs. Scheuermann served as Director of the Kenilworth Public Library for fifteen years until her retirement in 1987, and she received designation in the "Women of Kenilworth" publication in 2006. She had been a member in good standing of the American Library Association for forty-nine continuous years.

      Active in St. Theresa's Church since 1950, Mrs. Scheuermann was a Catechist, a member of the Pre Cana and Cana teams, a substitute teacher in the parish school, and a CYO chaperone. Mrs. Scheuermann initiated and managed, as a volunteer, the school library at St. Theresa's for seven years. Mrs. Scheuermann also participated in the RCIA program at St. Theresa's, and she was an active member of the Pro Life and Spiritual Life committees. She served as a Lector and Eucharist Minister for many years, and she received the St. Theresa's Parish Stewardship award in 2001. Mrs. Scheuermann was a member of the Rosary Society since 1950, serving as president during three terms, and as a member of the advisory board and numerous committees. A delegate to the National Council of Catholic Women, she also served as a leader in the Cursillo movement in the Archdiocese of Newark. In 1994, Mrs. Scheuermann was recognized for distinguished service within the Archdiocese of Newark as a recipient of the Pro Meritis Award.

      Mrs. Scheuermann travelled extensively, mostly by ship, with her late husband and, more recently, with other family members.

      Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Regina Fresolone and her husband, Victor; Mrs. Dolores Mahon and her husband, Charles; Mrs. Marian vonSothen and her husband, Peter; and Mrs. Marie McGrory and her husband, Kevin; a son, Charles M. Jr. and his wife, Maureen; a sister, Mrs. Anne Schnabel; eleven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her parents, George and Anna, her husband, Charles, and her brother, George.
