Blurb from 1912 college yearbook:
August Henry Schirmer
"Schirm," Sigma Chi. .. Cieveland
St. Ignatius College [high school]
Thesis: The Study of Power Rates
Schirm is noteworthy from the fact that he chose the electrical course and has never regretted his choice.
He has electrical engineering down so fine that he can telI the voltage in a wire by looking at it. Schirm says that
he will be glad to get out so that he can put a little of his knowledge to use. When he goes we shall miss a
good fellow -- a true friend-and a fine chap to know.

"Gus delighted in telling the story of how he got his first job. In the spring of his last year at Case, in 1911,
representatives from several national companies visited the college to look over and if possible siphon off some
of the bright young engineers. One of the professors noticed that I. J. Thorp from the New York Telephone
Company had no one signed up to be interviewed. Thorpe was waiting in an office provided for him, but no
students had signed up. The professor, a bit embarrassed by this lack of interest, grabbed Gus on the run:
"Schirmer, go in there and talk to the man." And as he told the story years later, that was how his life-long career
at Bell Labs began."

----------------------------------------------------
Sunday afternoon was the time for a family outing, a habit Gus continued for many years.
From the time he bought his first car, Gus spent Sunday afternoons with his children giving Mary some free time.
At first it was just the novelty and joy of riding in a car, a real treat for the children. He sometimes asked cousins
to ride along.
One Sunday afternoon after buying the touring car, Gus set off for a Sunday drive. Bill sat proudly in front with
his father, and the two little girls Mary Agnes and Angie scrambled into the pack. Gus drove to the Sieben's to
pick up some of the cousins. Norbie, Buddy and Gertrude piled into the back, climbing over each other to get

the best vantage point to see - and be seen. Gus drove slowly as the children chattered excitedly. He noted a
sudden silence from the back seat, and then heard a man yelling at him and waving excitedly. "Hey, Mister," he
shouted. "You dropped something." Gus stopped the car and looked to where the man was pointing. Gertrude
was running as fast as her little legs would carry her. Unhurt, but chastened, she climbed back in. That ended
the ride for that day.
No more open cars for Gus."
