      --------------------------------------
Recollections from family members solicited and compiled by Terese Schirmer Piccoli, organized and transcribed by Anne Marie Zellner:

      Joan (Zellner) Scheuermann:

Since we lived in the house with her, we were the ones who saw her most. My earliest recollections are of a typical grandma -- old (I thought -- she was in her sixties when I was born). She always wore black shoes, black and white dresses, had long grey hair tied up in a bun, and wore glasses. She was wonderful -- always had tea and streusel cake for us after school. Sometimes she would wait to make the crumbs until I came home from school because I loved to roll them in my hands.

She was a woman of profound faith and courage, having raised eleven children on a shoemaker’s wages (and for so few years).

She loved to crochet and sat in her rocker in the living room listening to “Our Gal Sunday” on the radio. Her rosary beads were always in her pocket. She also loved to ride in the car and almost every Sunday after dinner (noon) my Dad piled us all into his Chevy and off we went, often to Delbarton or Newton (more about that in Fr. Martin’s story) or to the shore.

She was an insulin-dependent diabetic (My mother [Anna Mager Zellner] gave her the injection). When she couldn’t see to crochet she sat in her rocker and enjoyed her radio “soaps.”

When I was quite young, I remember that the coffee pot was always on the coal stove. She often had her lady friends in for a “coffee klatch” until they were too old to take the trolley car to visit her.

She went to 6:30 Mass every Sunday with my mom. They always stopped for buns at the local bakery even though she was a great cook and baker. I doubt she even ate the goodies because she was diabetic. She liked to have fresh bakery goodies for anyone who might drop in on Sunday. Uncle Gus had a car; so did Uncle Tom and Uncle Ted in addition to my dad. My mom was the only woman in the family who drove a car. Ferd and Charlie never drove.

Grandma was born American -- no accent. I really think the most German any of them spoke was in school (St. Mary’s) where they learned it. Uncle Martin was a German teacher, but I don’t ever remember speaking German when home because we kids were with him a lot and we knew nothing-unfortunately.

Grandma was ill for quite a long time. Aunt Jotty and my mom took care of her with help from others when possible. She died at home June 12, 1941.

      Margy (Schirmer) Conlin:

Grandma was never stooped over like some old people. I remember her sitting up so straight in that chair with the crocheted doilies.
