  • Notes
    • Committed to sanitarium after husband Conrad's death.

Part of her mental illness, most likely, was religious fanaticism. She was known for taking the statues down from the walls of the church, kissing and adoring them, then replacing them.

Embroidery designer for the Schiffli Company.

According to Anne Zellner Schnabel, was born in 1862.

Information extracted from Conrad Zellner's military pension file:

Some time after Conrad's death, Lizzie became mentally incapacitated. Anna Strack, her daughter Elsie's adopted mother, became Lizzie's legal guardian on June 25, 1909. Documents from this point on generally refer to Lizzie as "insane" or "lunatic." Her death certificate lists Lizzie as "manic-depressive (depressed)".

Conrad's pension file contains about 30 or 40 letters written in the mid-1930's between the Veterans Administration and the Strack family (represented by Elsie's adopted brother Paul and his law firm) concerning continuation of benefits from Conrad's pension. The government apparently tried to stop the benefits ($12/month) at one point, saying that Anna Strack, the guardian, was not a blood relative and therefore should not receive the money, as there was a possibility that she would use it for her own personal gain. The Stracks responded that Elsie visited her mother once a month, always bringing her "delicacies" of fresh fruit and ice cream, and provided a list of things she had purchased for her mother in recent months:

      One bath robe - $5.00
      Pair slippers - $1.50
      6 nightgowns @ $1.50 each - $9.00
      One sweater - $5.00
One brush and comb - $1.50
One tooth brush and powder - 25 cents
      Totalling $22.75

      The pension was continued.

Lizzie died June 26, 1939 at Essex County Hospital in Cedar Grove Township, NJ. Cause of death was Cerebral Thrombosis.
